The Dakota Frybread package contains flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. You add exactly 1 1/2 cups of warm water, mix for about 3 minutes. Heat 1 cup of oil, or shortening to about 375 degrees (or medium high heat), test a small piece of dough. It the dough sizzles, ready to fry, but if the oil is not hot, the dough will sink to the bottom, wait until the oil is hot. Be Careful! Ventilate! Focus on your frybread. When you mix the dough, let set for 20 minutes, then make 8 balls of dough. Flatten with a roller or the palm of your hand. Your oil will be hot so be ready. Fry on each side (when oil is hot enough) about 30 seconds until golden brown. Awesome job as a frybread cook because you now have Native American frybread!
The best plan to work with the frybread dough and hot oil in a sturdy skillet is to prepare your dough balls before you heat your oil. Use about 1 cup of extra flour to roll your dough balls. Once your start rolling, keep going to spread the dough out to about 7 inches. Do not try to re-roll the dough ball, I find you get a tougher piece of frybread. If your flattened dough looks like Texas, that's okay, just fry away. Be careful, lift and flip the fried dough away from you. Peak at the cooked frybread to see if it is brown, do not flip over and over, the dough will only soak up more oil.
Frybread Tacos - put some chili made with beans and hamburger, add shredded cheese, lettuce, onion or jalapeno (optional), sour cream, or your choice of red or green salsa. You have a yummy meal of Indian Tacos!
Frybread with butter and honey, or powdered sugar is a great dessert. Try a Frybread sunday with ice cream, strawberries (or other fruit), whipped cream and drizzle your favorite chocolate syrup or other flavors. it's a great treat for your dinner table.
